Naturopathic doctors (NDs) are trained physicians licensed to practice medicine, prescribe medications, perform minor surgery, and utilize any of a number of recognized modalities of therapy in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease, illness, injury, and physical conditions. Naturopathic doctors utilize knowledge gained in both western and traditional areas of scientific study, observation, and experimentation, including anatomy, cellular biology, chemistry, and pharmacology. Naturopathic doctors have extensive training in orthomolecular physiology and nutrition, botanical, physical and homeopathy. Some Naturopathic doctors’ scope of practice also includes acupuncture.

The State of Oregon defines Naturopathic Physicians as “Primary Care Physicians that diagnose, treat, and care for patients using a system of practice that bases treatment of physiological functions and abnormal conditions on natural laws and substances governing the human body.”

Most NDs practice General Family Medicine, but many have specific focus areas such as gynecology, oncology, endocrinology, etc.

What is naturopathic medicine?

“Naturopathic medicine” means the discipline that includes physiotherapy, natural healing processes and minor surgery and has as its objective the maintaining of the body in, or of restoring it to, a state of normal health.
